The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) criticized the police action against protesting ace wrestlers in New Delhi. Party leader Supriya Sule questioned if the Home Ministry had granted permission to “manhandle” the wrestlers. She expressed deep dismay at the deplorable treatment of Olympic medallists and sportswomen and demanded unequivocal answers from the Central government.
Delhi Police detained ace wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia for violating law and order. The wrestlers breached the security cordon while attempting to move towards the new Parliament building for a planned women’s “Mahapanchayat.”
The wrestlers had resumed their agitation against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, demanding his arrest for alleged sexual harassment of several women grapplers, including a minor.
Supriya Sule stated it was unfortunate that sportspersons, who had brought honor to the nation through sports, were forced to fight for justice. She emphasized the sudden transformation of winners into villains seeking justice.
NCP spokesperson Clyde Crasto criticized Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani, questioning her duty to protect and solve the problems faced by the women wrestlers. He expressed disappointment that Irani only seemed to speak on issues concerning Rahul Gandhi, neglecting the wrestlers’ plight.
The incident has sparked controversy and raised concerns about athlete treatment and grievance handling. The NCP’s condemnation of the police action and their demand for answers from the central government demonstrate their commitment to advocating for the rights and well-being of sportspersons.
