Paris St Germain (PSG) announced on Saturday that Lionel Messi will be leaving the club at the end of the season. PSG had recruited Messi in August 2021 with the aim of winning the Champions League.
During the final round of Ligue 1, PSG host Clermont confirmed the news, stating that “Leo Messi’s adventure with Paris St Germain will come to an end at the conclusion of the 2022-23 campaign.”
PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi expressed gratitude to Messi for his service to the club over the past two seasons. He acknowledged Messi’s impact, including winning back-to-back Ligue 1 titles, inspiring younger players, and his overall contribution to PSG and Ligue 1. Al-Khelaifi wished Messi and his family the best for the future.
It was reported that Messi was suspended by the club for an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia last month. The reason for the trip was Messi’s commercial contract with Saudi Arabia, which involved promoting tourism in the country.
As for Messi’s next move, he has received a formal offer from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal for the upcoming season. Additionally, there have been speculations about a potential return to FC Barcelona, his former club where he spent most of his career. Another option could be a move to the United States to play in Major League Soccer (MLS).
