US President Joe Biden has expressed his gratitude to German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz for the “profound” support Germany has shown Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
The words of appreciation were conveyed during a meeting between the two leaders at the White House, following a series of tense international exchanges that have occurred between the US and Russia on the matter.
“I want to thank you for the profound support that Germany has provided Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression,” Biden said. “You have been a leader on this issue and I am grateful for your leadership and support.”
Scholz, who is the current finance minister of Germany and was the Vice-Chancellor under Angela Merkel, thanked Biden for his “strong support” in the face of Russian aggression.
“We in Germany will continue to stand by Ukraine as it confronts the challenges posed by Moscow,” Scholz said. The German minister also stressed the importance of the international community coming together to support Ukraine in its efforts to maintain its sovereignty and territorial integrity. He noted the importance of maintaining a “strong dialogue” between the US and Europe, and said that Germany was ready to work with the US to ensure that Ukraine was able to “pursue its path as a sovereign and independent nation”.
Scholz added that Germany was committed to supporting Ukraine in its efforts to strengthen its economy and create an environment of economic stability. He also highlighted the importance of increasing the level of democracy and human rights in Ukraine.
Biden agreed with the sentiments expressed by Scholz, and said that the US was “fully committed” to supporting Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression. He also praised the German government for its commitment to the Ukrainian people and said that the US would continue to stand with them.
The meeting between Biden and Scholz comes at a time of heightened tension between the US and Russia, with the US accusing Russia of attempting to interfere in the 2020 US presidential election. The two leaders discussed the importance of maintaining the transatlantic alliance and working together to counter Russian aggression.
With the support of the German government and the US-led transatlantic alliance, Ukraine is hopeful that it will be able to continue to maintain its sovereignty and independence in the face of Russian aggression. The meeting between Biden and Scholz is an important step forward in the fight against Russian aggression and a sign of the US and Europe’s commitment to the Ukrainian people.
