Pakistan plunged into chaos on May 9, 2023, following the arrest of Imran Khan, the ousted Prime Minister and chief of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party. While the Pakistan Supreme Court declared his arrest unlawful, the Islamabad High Court granted him bail for two weeks on the Al Qadri Trust Case, adding complexity to the already heated political climate. This article aims to analyze the aftermath of Imran Khan’s arrest, highlighting four key trends that contribute to the worsening situation in Pakistan.

The extensive violence witnessed across the country and the overwhelming number of PTI supporters taking to the streets underscore Imran Khan’s popularity. The targeted nature of the violence, focused primarily on the establishment’s infrastructure and senior military figures, further emphasizes the discontent among PTI supporters. Attacks on prominent locations, including the Corps Commander’s residence in Lahore, the Frontier Corps Headquarters in Lahore, and the General Headquarters (GHQ), reveal a deep-seated frustration. Videos capturing anti-Army slogans and stone pelting of military vehicles serve as grim reminders of the intensity of the unrest.

The arrest of Imran Khan has strained the relationship between the government and the PTI. With the Supreme Court ruling his arrest unlawful and the High Court granting him bail, a sense of conflict arises. The government’s decision to detain Khan while on court premises raises questions about the state’s adherence to due process. The discord between the government and PTI adds fuel to the fire and hampers any prospects for political reconciliation.

The scathing press brief by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of the establishment, prior to Imran Khan’s arrest exacerbates tensions. The confrontation between the PTI and the establishment has escalated, with the violence on the streets reflecting the deepening divide. The targeted attacks on military installations and personnel indicate a growing mistrust and resentment towards the establishment’s influence in politics.

The judiciary’s intervention in granting bail to Imran Khan for two weeks on the Al Qadri Trust Case marks a significant development. While it provides temporary relief to Khan and the PTI, it also signifies a challenge to the government’s authority. The judiciary’s assertiveness in such matters raises questions about the separation of powers and the delicate balance between the branches of government. This extraordinary relief further intensifies the political climate and the existing power struggles.

Pakistan finds itself in a precarious situation following the arrest of Imran Khan. The widespread violence, primarily targeting the establishment and its infrastructure, showcases Khan’s popularity and the depth of discontent among his supporters. The strained relations between the government and the PTI, coupled with the confrontation with the establishment, further contribute to the escalating tensions. The judiciary’s involvement, while providing temporary relief, adds another layer of complexity to the political landscape. As Pakistan grapples with these challenges, finding a resolution to the deep-rooted issues will be crucial for restoring stability and fostering a more harmonious political climate.
