A senior aide to Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Medvedev, has issued a warning that the Western world is severely underestimating the risk of nuclear war. Medvedev, who serves as Russia’s security council deputy chairman, accused the West of not fully comprehending the potential threat of nuclear conflict. Russia has consistently claimed that the West is engaging in a proxy war with it over Ukraine.
Medvedev emphasized that there are undeniable laws of warfare, and in the event of a nuclear confrontation, a pre-emptive strike would be necessary. He further argued that if Ukraine were allowed to possess nuclear weapons, a scenario that no Western nation has publicly advocated, it would result in a nuclear-armed missile being directed towards them.
“The Anglo-Saxons do not fully realize this and believe that it will not come to this. It will under certain conditions,” stated Medvedev, suggesting that the Western powers are underestimating the potential escalation of the conflict.
Furthermore, Medvedev predicted that the invasion of Ukraine could extend for decades. He criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, referring to him as impossible to negotiate with and labeling him a “clown.”
In response to Medvedev’s warnings, President Zelensky revealed that a Russian missile strike on a clinic in Dnipro had resulted in at least one fatality and 15 injuries on Friday. The attack serves as a grim reminder of the intensifying violence and human toll in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
The remarks made by Medvedev reflect the increasing tensions between Russia and the West, particularly over the situation in Ukraine. The concerns about the potential for nuclear war serve as a stark reminder of the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict and prevent a catastrophic outcome.
