Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister, James Marape, created a stir in New Delhi by respectfully touching Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s feet. This traditional genuflection intrigued Indians, who questioned Marape’s background and its significance.

Sasindran Muthuvel, the Governor of West New Britain Province of Papua New Guinea, explained that genuflection is a customary practice in the southwestern Pacific country, not limited to any faith.

Marape, 52, belongs to the Huli tribe, one of PNG’s largest ethnic groups. His father, a Seventh-day Adventist pastor, influenced his religious upbringing.

As PNG’s Prime Minister since May 2019, Marape’s gesture towards Modi showcased respect for elders.

The meeting between Modi and Marape holds significance for bilateral trade. Talks encompassed commerce, technology, healthcare, and climate change.

Trade between India and Papua New Guinea is flourishing. India exports textiles, pharmaceuticals, machinery, while PNG exports gold, marine products, timber, copper ores, coffee, cocoa, and vanilla.

The Modi-Marape meeting enhances trade and cooperation. It paves the way for stronger bilateral relations in trade, technology, and sustainable development.
