Telangana Formation Day, celebrated annually on June 2nd since 2014, is a significant event in the state of Telangana, India. This day marks the commemoration of the formation of the state and is observed as a state public holiday. Telangana Formation Day is an occasion to honor the sacrifices made by those who fought for the establishment of Telangana and to celebrate the achievements and progress of the state since its inception.

The journey towards the creation of Telangana was a complex and lengthy process. The demand for a separate Telangana state emerged in the early 1960s, driven by concerns of neglect and disparity in development between the Telangana region and the rest of Andhra Pradesh. The movement gained momentum over the years, fueled by social, political, and economic factors.

Finally, in 2013, the Congress Working Committee passed a resolution on July 1st, expressing their intention to form Telangana as a separate state. This decision set the wheels in motion for the formation of Telangana. Subsequently, the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014 bill was introduced in the Parliament, underwent various stages of discussion and amendments, and was eventually passed in February 2014. The bill received the President of India’s approval on March 1st, 2014, and Telangana officially came into existence on June 2nd, 2014.

Before its formation, Telangana was part of Hyderabad State. In 1948, after gaining independence from the rule of the Nizam, Hyderabad State merged with India. The linguistic reorganization of states was an important aspect of India’s nation-building process, and the States Reorganisation Committee was established to oversee this process. Following the committee’s recommendations, Telangana was merged with Andhra Pradesh on November 1st, 1956.

However, concerns about the neglect of Telangana’s development within the unified state led to demands for a separate statehood. Before the merger, a Gentleman’s Agreement was signed to safeguard the interests of Telangana. The agreement included provisions such as the allocation of government jobs based on the population of Telangana and Andhra State, and the rotational election of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister from each state. These measures were intended to ensure equitable treatment for Telangana within the unified state of Andhra Pradesh.

Since its formation, Telangana has witnessed positive developments and made significant progress in various areas. The state has attracted increased investment, leading to economic growth and infrastructure development. Telangana has also focused on poverty reduction and has implemented various welfare schemes to uplift marginalized sections of society. Employment opportunities have improved, and the state has become a hub for information technology and other industries.

Telangana Formation Day serves as a moment of celebration for the state’s accomplishments and an optimistic outlook for its future. The day is marked by various activities, including parades, cultural programs, and speeches that highlight Telangana’s rich heritage and cultural diversity. It is an occasion for the people of Telangana to come together and celebrate their identity and the progress they have achieved as an individual state.

In conclusion, Telangana Formation Day is an important milestone in the history of Telangana. It symbolizes the culmination of a long and arduous struggle for statehood and represents the aspirations and dreams of the people of Telangana. The day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the pioneers of the movement and a celebration of the achievements and progress of Telangana since its formation in 2014.
