TDB Takes Strong Stand: No More RSS ‘Shakhas’ in Kerala Temples

Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB), the governing body for temples in Kerala, has reinforced its ban on Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ‘shakhas’ or mass drills in temples. TDB is concerned about poor enforcement of the 2021 ban and warns of strict action against non-compliant officials.

In 2016, TDB banned RSS from arms training in temples after allegations by former Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran. The reissued circular on March 30, 2021, urged officials to prevent RSS activities in temples.

The directive aims to preserve temple sanctity and prevent non-religious use. Strict enforcement is stressed to uphold cultural and spiritual significance.

Supporters argue temples should focus solely on religious practices and resist political influence.

Critics claim the ban infringes on freedom of association and expression. They argue for RSS rights to organize ‘shakhas’ and suggest political motivations.

TDB’s recent circular reaffirms its commitment to prevent temple misuse. The impact on TDB-RSS relationship remains to be seen.
