On the Calcutta High Court’s direction, the Central Bureau of Investigation has filed an FIR into an alleged scam involving hiring candidates for various positions in various West Bengal towns, according to officials quoted by the news agency PTI on Tuesday. On April 21, the high court gave the directive, and the following day, the CBI filed the FIR. Ayan Sil and his business ABS Infozone Pvt Ltd, which was involved in the printing and evaluation of OMR sheets, have been named in a case filed by the investigation agency for allegedly manipulating the scores of applicants, according to officials.

While looking into charges of bribery in the appointment of school teachers in the state, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) brought attention to the purported scam in the recruitment OF various posts in municipalities of West Bengal. According to PTI, it had filed its findings to the Calcutta High Court, which had noted it.

The ED purportedly said that the agents, including Ayan Sil, implicated in the case of the school jobs bribery fraud were also allegedly involved in the hiring of clerks, peons, sweepers, and drivers in several towns. Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of the Calcutta High Court had asked the CBI to look into the case of the municipality recruitment scandal. The CBI was instructed by the high court to file a report on April 28 detailing the actions done in response to this order. According to PTI, Justice Gangopadhyay had instructed West Bengal’s chief secretary and director general of police to support the CBI and ED in their investigation into the alleged scam if the central agencies so desired.

According to the ED, the predicate agency (here, the CBI) would need to file a second FIR to investigate the alleged scheme by the pertinent Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act provisions.

Since the claimed proceeds of crime from the alleged teachers’ recruitment scam were reportedly mixed with those from the purported municipality recruitment scam, the ED also provided the CBI with full information and asked it to look into the alleged irregularities in municipal recruitment.
