The first image of the invitation card for the inauguration of the new Parliament building has emerged. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be inaugurating the new building located in the heart of Lutyens in Delhi on May 28. The invitation card, issued by the Secretary-General of Lok Sabha, extends a cordial invitation to witness the dedication of the new Parliament building to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla had earlier invited PM Modi to inaugurate the new Parliament building. The construction of the new building, which signifies the spirit of a self-reliant India, has been completed. The inauguration will coincide with the completion of nine years of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in power.
The new Parliament building is a significant part of the Central Vista redevelopment project, which aims to transform the nation’s power corridor. The project includes revamping the three-kilometer stretch of Rajpath from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate, constructing a common central secretariat, a new office and residence for the Prime Minister, and a new Vice-President enclave. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD), under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, is overseeing the execution of the project.
In December 2020, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the new Parliament building, which spans an area of 64,500 square meters. The building will feature a grand Constitution Hall to showcase India’s democratic heritage, a lounge for Members of Parliament, a library, multiple committee rooms, dining areas, and ample parking space.
The new Parliament building will have three main gates named Gyan Dwar, Shakti Dwar, and Karma Dwar, according to sources. It will also have separate entrances for MPs, VIPs, and visitors. The Lok Sabha chamber will accommodate 888 members, while the Rajya Sabha will have 384 seats. During joint sessions, the Lok Sabha chamber can be expanded to accommodate up to 1,224 members.
Portraits of prominent figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, and other former prime ministers of the country will be displayed in the new building. Additionally, a portrait of the polymath Kautilya and a model of the wheel from Konark’s Sun Temple is expected to be installed. Tata Projects has undertaken the construction of the new Parliament building at an estimated cost of Rs 970 crore.
