INS Mormugao: A Symbol of Indian Maritime Heritage

Named after the historic port city of Goa, INS Mormugao, symbolizes India’s rich maritime heritage. It embarked on its maiden sea sortie on December 19, 2021, coinciding with Goa’s celebration of liberation from Portuguese rule, marking 60 years of independence.

Impressive Specifications and Advanced Propulsion System

Measuring 163 meters in length and 17 meters in breadth, INS Mormugao stands as one of India’s most formidable warships. It is propelled by four powerful gas turbines in a Combined Gas and Gas (COGAG) configuration, enabling speeds exceeding 30 knots. The vessel’s advanced stealth features ensure reduced radar detection.

Sophisticated Weapons and Sensors Enhancing Combat Capabilities

INS Mormugao is equipped with a wide array of sophisticated weapons and sensors, including surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles. Its modern surveillance radar provides valuable target data to the ship’s gunnery weapon systems. Additionally, indigenous rocket launchers, torpedo launchers, and anti-submarine warfare helicopters enhance its anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

Prepared for Diverse Warfare Conditions

The vessel’s capabilities extend to nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) warfare conditions. It is equipped to operate effectively and maintain combat readiness even under these challenging circumstances, as highlighted by the Ministry of Defence.

Showcasing India’s Progress in Indigenous Shipbuilding and Naval Technologies

By successfully engaging a sea-skimming supersonic target, INS Mormugao exemplifies India’s advancements in indigenous shipbuilding and naval technologies. The achievement reinforces the Indian Navy’s commitment to modernize its fleet and strengthen its combat capabilities. It aligns with the Aatma Nirbhar Bharat vision, reducing dependence on foreign defense imports and promoting self-reliance.

INS Mormugao: Enhancing Maritime Security and Defense Preparedness

INS Mormugao’s capabilities and versatility make it a significant asset for the Indian Navy. It bolsters maritime security and defense preparedness, ensuring the safeguarding of India’s territorial waters and maritime interests in the region.

INS Mormugao’s successful engagement of a sea-skimming supersonic target serves as a testament to the Indian Navy’s prowess and dedication to building a self-reliant defense industry. This achievement propels India’s position as a formidable naval power and reaffirms its commitment to protect its maritime boundaries.
