In the wake of a tragic incident involving the loss of a young woman’s life in a flooded underpass, the Road Infrastructure Department of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has conducted a comprehensive audit report of 41 underpasses in Bengaluru. The incident, which occurred on May 22 at K.R. Circle in the heart of the city, has highlighted the urgent need for improving the safety and infrastructure of these critical transportation arteries.

On that fateful day, a 23-year-old woman and her family found themselves in a harrowing situation as their cab entered an underpass submerged in floodwaters. Tragically, the driver misjudged the depth of the water, leading to the cab drowning in the underpass. The incident shocked the city and sparked concerns about the safety of Bengaluru’s underpasses, which are vital for smooth traffic flow in the city.

Recognizing the significance of addressing the existing vulnerabilities, the BBMP’s Road Infrastructure Department swiftly conducted an audit of 41 underpasses throughout the city. The audit aimed to identify critical issues, evaluate the current state of infrastructure, and propose necessary improvements to enhance the safety and functionality of these vital transport links.

The audit report has identified several pressing concerns in the underpasses, ranging from poor drainage systems to inadequate signage and lighting. The lack of proper maintenance and oversight emerged as a common theme, with many underpasses suffering from accumulated debris, potholes, and ineffective flood mitigation measures.

One of the key recommendations from the report is the immediate need to improve drainage systems in all underpasses to prevent flooding during heavy rains. The audit highlighted the importance of regular maintenance to ensure the proper functioning of pumps, as well as the removal of debris and silt from drains.

Furthermore, the report emphasized the significance of clear signage and adequate lighting in underpasses to enhance visibility for drivers and pedestrians. By ensuring proper illumination and prominently displaying warnings about potential hazards, such as waterlogging, the chances of accidents can be significantly reduced.

Additionally, the audit report called for improved coordination between various departments responsible for underpass maintenance. It emphasized the need for a centralized system to monitor the condition of underpasses regularly and promptly address any issues that may arise.

The BBMP has recognized the urgent need for action and has committed to implementing the recommendations outlined in the audit report. The Road Infrastructure Department, in collaboration with other concerned authorities, has initiated a comprehensive plan to address the identified shortcomings systematically.

To ensure accountability and timely execution, the BBMP plans to establish a dedicated task force responsible for overseeing the implementation of the recommended improvements. The task force will work closely with relevant stakeholders, including local law enforcement agencies, to prioritize the safety and functionality of underpasses across Bengaluru.

The tragic incident at K.R. Circle underpass has served as a wake-up call for the city of Bengaluru, prompting a thorough audit of underpasses and highlighting critical issues that demand immediate attention. The audit report’s findings and recommendations underscore the importance of proactive measures to enhance the safety, functionality, and maintenance of these vital transportation arteries. By swiftly implementing the suggested improvements and establishing a robust system of oversight and accountability, Bengaluru can ensure that its underpasses become safer and more reliable for the thousands of commuters who rely on them every day.
