Ananthapuram Anil Kumar, a social activist hailing from Ananthapuram, Andhra Pradesh, has become a local hero after his Home for Birds project helped add over 150,000 sparrows to the town. Through the project, his team, Home for Birds, has successfully installed more than 68,000 man-made nests in Ananthapuram, made of natural koir sourced through rural women in Alleppey and Kanyakumari.

The project, which started 16 months ago, has yielded great results in welcoming back urban sparrows to Ananthapuram. Every day, Anil Kumar has been distributing nests free of cost from his house in the morning for the last 16 months. His sheer hard work has earned him a place in the Harvard World Records for Ananthapuram, being the only town in the world with more than 58,000 man-made nests made of natural coir.

Anil Kumar’s latest project, Water for Birds, started six months ago, focuses on quenching the thirst of birds by distributing more than 10,000 water bowls made of natural clay. The project aims to provide clean drinking water to the birds, especially during the summer months when water is scarce.

Anil Kumar’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, and the people of Ananthapuram have lauded him for his contribution to the environment. He has inspired many locals to take up similar initiatives and has been a driving force behind making Ananthapuram a bird-friendly town.

In an interview, Anil Kumar said, “I have always been passionate about nature and wildlife. When I saw the dwindling population of sparrows in our town, I knew I had to do something about it. I am thrilled that my efforts have paid off and that Ananthapuram is now home to thousands of sparrows.”

Anil Kumar’s Home for Birds project and Water for Birds project have had a significant impact on the town’s environment and biodiversity. His selfless dedication to the cause has made him a local hero, and his initiatives are sure to inspire others to follow in his footsteps
