The Government of India has announced plans to geo-tag drains that carry discharge from villages along the banks of the river Ganga. The aim is to curb the dumping of solid waste into the river. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the rural Swachh Bharat Mission (G) will collaborate with urban local bodies to take immediate action.
The decision comes in response to concerns about the increasing pollution caused by debris and solid waste being dumped along the riverbanks. The government is considering using funds from AMRUT 2.0 to install screens and prevent solid waste from entering the river. Cooperation from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has been sought for this initiative.
Additional information regarding the geo-tagged drains will be promptly provided to urban local bodies, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, and the rural Swachh Bharat Mission (G) to facilitate swift action on the issue.
Regarding this matter, the Secretary of the Ministry of Jal Shakti suggested that funds allocated under AMRUT 2.0 could be utilized to install screens and prevent solid waste from entering the river water, according to the official statement quoted by PTI. The statement also highlighted the need for cooperation from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in this regard.
