An ex-IT programmer turned Ukrainian soldier has revealed how a simple modification to a commercially available drone can transform it into a deadly weapon capable of taking out Russian tanks. The four-rotor drone, which can be purchased over the counter for as little as $300, can be fitted with explosives that can be detonated on impact, causing significant damage to even the most heavily-armored vehicles.

The former IT programmer, who has chosen to remain anonymous, spoke about his experience with the modified drone in an interview. He explained that while he was still working as an IT programmer, he had a keen interest in military technology and began experimenting with drones as a hobby. This interest eventually led him to join the Ukrainian army, where he saw an opportunity to put his skills to use.

According to the programmer-turned-soldier, the drone can be easily modified with commercially available components to carry explosives weighing up to 2kg. The drone can be flown remotely and can be used to target and destroy Russian tanks and other armored vehicles, which are often used by separatist rebels in the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine.

The simplicity and affordability of the drone modification make it a potential game-changer in the conflict. While the Ukrainian military has access to more sophisticated weaponry, the use of modified commercial drones offers a low-cost and effective way to target Russian tanks and other military vehicles.

However, the use of such drones is not without its risks. The soldier warned that the drones are vulnerable to anti-aircraft fire and that their use requires careful planning and execution. The modified drones must be flown at a low altitude to avoid detection by radar, and the explosives must be carefully calibrated to ensure they are powerful enough to cause damage, but not so powerful as to make the drone unstable.

The use of commercial drones in warfare is a growing trend, with a number of countries developing drone technology for military purposes. While the use of modified commercial drones may be controversial, the Ukrainian soldier’s revelation highlights the potential for innovation and creativity in conflict situations.

The revelation that a simple commercial drone can be modified to carry explosives capable of taking out Russian tanks is a stark reminder of the changing nature of warfare. The affordability and simplicity of the modification make it a potentially game-changing innovation in the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine. However, it also underscores the importance of responsible and careful use of technology in conflict situations. The former IT programmer turned Ukrainian soldier’s story is a testament to the potential for creativity and innovation in even the most challenging and dangerous environments.
