am glad that as a faculty member of BPNI Maharashtra I have participated in training more than 30000 ICDS staff such as aanganwadi workers ,supervisors,CDPOs and also goverment health staff such as doctors, nurses and health workers. Mother’s milk is nectar for her baby.. breastfeeding is a right of mother and baby. Its not only beneficial for baby and mother but also for the society and environment. During school days I was fascinated by the story of Hirkani a milkmaid during the time of chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who climbed down the cliff to breastfeed her baby.
After joining Mother Support Group I understood the Hirikani in depth and in a better way. Mother support group is established in 1995 By Dr.Prashant GANGAL, well-known pediatrician with the tagline ….of mothers by mothers for mothers. Till now breastfeeding is not considered as science. mothers get information from other ladies in the house. It is based on their own experiences…so after delivery mother gets different information from different people and she gets confused.
Due to many myths and misunderstandings in the society she lands up in breastfeeding problems. But if mother gets proper information, guidance ,encouragement and support from a professional consultant her journey becomes easy and successful. Today’s babies are tomorrow’s citizens. So nutrition of a child in the first 1000 days of life is like a fixed deposit for future life and helps for nation’s development .I am working in this field for more than 20 years ..I am a mother of two exclusively breastfed children .My elder son is an orthopedic surgeon and the younger one is in the final year MBBS.
