In a crucial meeting held on Monday, senior leaders from Delhi and Punjab conveyed to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and former MP Rahul Gandhi their reservations about extending support to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in their fight against the Centre’s ordinance on the posting and transfers of civil servants in the national capital. The gathering was arranged by Mr. Kharge in response to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s request for a meeting to seek their assistance in Parliament regarding the contentious ordinance that grants the Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi the final authority over bureaucrats serving in the Delhi Government.

The Congress leaders, cognizant of the sensitivity and complexity of the matter, listened attentively to the concerns raised during the meeting. They recognized that a thorough evaluation of the ordinance and its potential implications was necessary before committing to any course of action. The participants emphasized that the party must not rush into a decision that could have far-reaching consequences for the functioning of the Delhi Government and the overall power dynamics between the Centre and the state.

One key concern raised by the leaders was the potential for the issue to be politicized and exploited by various parties for their own gains. They were wary of being perceived as taking sides without a comprehensive understanding of the ordinance’s provisions and the reasons behind its implementation. It was stressed that the Congress should not align itself solely with the AAP’s stance, but rather engage in a thoughtful examination of the matter to ensure the best interests of the people of Delhi are served.

The leaders also highlighted the need for a holistic approach that considers both the legal and constitutional aspects of the ordinance. They emphasized the importance of upholding the principles of democracy and ensuring a balance between the powers of the elected government and the Lieutenant-Governor in Delhi. The Congress leaders recognized that a nuanced understanding of the legal framework governing the relationship between the Centre and the state was crucial before taking a definitive stance.

Moreover, the leaders stressed the significance of engaging in a constructive dialogue with all stakeholders involved, including the Delhi Government, the Lieutenant-Governor’s office, and legal experts. They proposed that the Congress adopt a consultative approach, inviting expert opinions and seeking comprehensive insights to inform their decision-making process. By doing so, they believed the Congress could contribute to a more nuanced and well-informed discussion on the matter, ultimately leading to a resolution that respects the principles of federalism and preserves the democratic spirit.

While the leaders acknowledged the request made by Arvind Kejriwal to support the AAP in Parliament, they underscored the importance of thoroughly analyzing the implications of the ordinance and engaging in a broader conversation with multiple stakeholders. They cautioned against hastily aligning with a particular party’s position without due diligence, as it could potentially undermine the credibility of the Congress and its commitment to responsible and informed decision-making.

The meeting convened by Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi provided a platform for senior Congress leaders to voice their concerns about extending immediate support to the Aam Aadmi Party’s fight against the ordinance on civil servants’ transfer. The leaders emphasized the need for a comprehensive evaluation of the matter, engaging in dialogue with all stakeholders, and seeking expert opinions to ensure a well-informed decision that upholds democratic principles and serves the best interests of the people. The Congress leaders recognized the importance of striking the right balance between the powers of the elected government and the Lieutenant-Governor, and pledged to approach the issue with the necessary caution and diligence it deserves.
