Parramatta, NSW – Community leader and humanitarian Moses Vedamuthu has been named Citizen of the Year by the City of Parramatta, recognising his outstanding dedication to supporting vulnerable communities across Western Sydney.

The prestigious honour was presented during the Australia Day celebrations at Parramatta Town Hall, as part of the City of Parramatta’s annual Citizen of the Year Awards, which recognise individuals whose service and leadership have made a significant contribution to the community.

Vedamuthu received the award for his tireless work through SOHAS Charity (Support Organisation for Homeless and Asylum Seekers), an organisation he founded to support people experiencing hardship and social disadvantage.

For the past six years, Vedamuthu has led SOHAS in delivering essential assistance to those most in need. The organisation provides weekly food and grocery support to elders, homeless individuals, refugees, survivors of domestic violence, single parents and international students across six local government areas, including Parramatta. Recently, SOHAS has expanded its services to the Hunter Region, further strengthening its community impact.

Beyond food relief, Vedamuthu has focused on creating pathways to education and employment. Under his leadership, SOHAS has offered free Diploma courses to more than 30 students, assisted migrants and refugees with resume preparation and job training, and helped 28 individuals secure employment.

During National Homelessness Week, Vedamuthu and his team distributed over 100 blankets and sleeping bags to people experiencing homelessness, offering comfort and dignity during the winter months.

Looking ahead, Vedamuthu’s vision includes establishing a SOHAS Community Hub, which aims to provide free IT training for First Nations students and create long-term opportunities for education, skills development and empowerment.

Speaking about the recognition, Vedamuthu said the award reflects a deep commitment to serving the community and uplifting those facing hardship.

“This is an honour that fills me with pride and purpose,” he said.
“I believe being a good citizen means taking responsibility for the wellbeing of my community, and I have learned that even small actions can make a big difference in the lives of those in need.”

“The Citizen of the Year award is important to me because it reflects the values that guide my involvement in the community – service, responsibility and a genuine commitment to creating positive change.”

Vedamuthu’s work has previously been recognised with several honours, including the NSW Volunteer Team of the Year Award and the Australia Day Community Group Award, highlighting the lasting impact of his leadership and compassion.

The City of Parramatta Citizen of the Year Awards celebrate individuals whose dedication strengthens the community and inspires others to contribute to the wellbeing of society. Through his continued service, Moses Vedamuthu stands as a powerful example of how community leadership and compassion can transform lives.
