In response to escalating violence in Churachandpur, Manipur, the state government has imposed Section 144 prohibitory orders for two months, aiming to curb unrest. The decision comes after a mass burial of victims from ongoing ethnic clashes, further complicating the delicate situation. Explore the background, implications, and public reactions to the government’s preventive measures.

Escalating Ethnic Clashes and Mass Burial

Churachandpur, Manipur, has been grappling with escalating ethnic clashes, leading to a recent mass burial of 87 Kuki-Zomi victims. The bodies, which had been stored in Imphal morgues, were airlifted to Churachandpur and Kangpokpi as ordered by the Supreme Court. The burial aimed to address the prolonged issue of handling the deceased from the clashes.

Prohibitory Orders Amidst Tensions:

In response to the fresh reports of violence, the Manipur government took a decisive step by imposing prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) in Churachandpur district. The orders, effective until February 18, 2024, seek to prevent a breach of law and maintain peace. The decision was prompted by serious apprehensions of a detrimental impact on public tranquility.

Clashes and Injuries:

The recent clashes unfolded in parts of Churachandpur and Thingkangphai village, resulting in 30 people sustaining injuries in the district. As a preventive measure, the prohibitory orders restrict the assembly of five or more people and the carrying of arms, sticks, swords, chemicals, or any lethal weapons.

Background of Ethnic Tensions:

The Indigenous Tribal Leader’s Forum (ITFL), an influential tribal body based in Churachandpur, played a significant role in enforcing law and order in the region. The forum announced the mass burial of over 60 individuals killed in ethnic clashes, shedding light on the complex dynamics contributing to the unrest.

Mixed Public Reactions:

The imposition of prohibitory orders has elicited mixed reactions from the public. While some welcome the government’s measures to maintain peace and tranquility, others express concerns over the restrictions impacting freedom of movement and expression. The delicate situation suggests a tense environment with the potential for further violence and unrest in the region.
