A 26-year-old inmate named Javed reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself at Tihar Jail, according to officials cited in a PTI report.

Javed, who had been convicted in a robbery case registered at Malviya Nagar police station, hanged himself in the common toilet area of central jail number 8/9 around 5 pm on Monday. The body has been transferred to a hospital, and a judicial magistrate is currently conducting an inquiry into the matter.

This incident follows the killing of an associate of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi in a rival gang attack inside Tihar Jail earlier in April. The deceased, Prince Tewatia, was an undertrial prisoner held in ward 6 of central jail number 3, which accommodates around 380 inmates. The safety and security of Tihar Jail have been questioned by critics in light of this incident.

Tihar Jail faces criticism over its safety conditions

Concerns have been raised regarding the well-being of inmates within the jail facility. Measures to ensure the safety of prisoners are under scrutiny as authorities investigate the suicide of Javed. The judicial magistrate’s inquiry aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Tihar Jail, one of the largest prisons in India, faces the challenge of maintaining a secure environment for its inmates. Authorities will likely face pressure to review and enhance security protocols in order to prevent similar incidents in the future. The tragic suicide highlights the need for robust measures to ensure the mental health and well-being of prisoners, as well as effective monitoring and intervention systems within the prison system.
