Pakistan plunged into chaos and uncertainty following the arrest of ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan, leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party, on May 9, 2023. While the Pakistan Supreme Court deemed his arrest unlawful, the Islamabad High Court granted him bail for a two-week period in the Al Qadri Trust Case. However, rather than heralding a period of relief, the aftermath of Imran Khan’s arrest has exacerbated the country’s political climate. The government, PTI, establishment, and judiciary have all taken firm positions, signaling a worsening situation in Pakistan.

The response of Imran Khan’s party, the PTI, to their leader’s arrest revealed the extent of his popularity. The outbreak of violence across the country and the overwhelming number of PTI supporters taking to the streets underscored the strength of Khan’s following. The violence was not arbitrary; rather, it specifically targeted the establishment, its infrastructure, and some senior military figures. Notable locations such as the Corps Commander’s residence in Lahore, the Frontier Corps Headquarters in Lahore, and the General Headquarters (GHQ) were among the targets. Anti-Army slogans were chanted, and Army vehicles were subjected to stone pelting. Multiple videos documenting these attacks have circulated, portraying the intensity and fervor of the protests.

The PTI’s robust response to Imran Khan’s arrest signifies deep-seated resentment and frustration among his supporters. The widespread violence and specifically targeted attacks on military establishments reflect a growing disillusionment with the status quo and the perceived influence of the establishment in Pakistani politics. The PTI’s popularity, as demonstrated by the massive street mobilization, poses a significant challenge to the government and the establishment, suggesting that the country’s political landscape is likely to face further upheaval.

The involvement of the establishment, including the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), in the unfolding events further compounds the political crisis. The ISPR’s scathing press brief prior to Khan’s arrest exemplified the strained relations between the PTI, the government, and the military establishment. The judiciary’s decision to grant extraordinary relief to Imran Khan by providing bail for two weeks has added another layer of complexity to the situation. While this move may temporarily alleviate tensions, it also reflects the deep divisions and conflicting interests within Pakistan’s power structures.

The arrest of Imran Khan and the subsequent developments have heightened the already volatile political climate in Pakistan. The PTI’s response and the public’s overwhelming support for Khan indicate the potential for further unrest. It is crucial for all stakeholders, including the government, PTI, establishment, and judiciary, to address the underlying issues driving this crisis. Failure to do so risks exacerbating tensions and prolonging the instability, which could have severe repercussions for Pakistan’s social fabric, economy, and international standing.

Pakistan finds itself in a state of turmoil and uncertainty following the arrest of Imran Khan, the ousted Prime Minister and leader of the PTI party. The violent response and widespread protests by PTI supporters indicate the strength of Khan’s popularity and the underlying dissatisfaction with the establishment. The involvement of the military establishment and the judiciary’s granting of bail to Khan further complicate the political crisis. It is imperative for all parties involved to seek a constructive path forward, as the worsening situation poses significant challenges to Pakistan’s stability and progress.
