The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has introduced a service called Sanchar Saathi, which aims to assist mobile subscribers and enhance device security. One of the features of this citizen-centric website is the ability to report and block a lost or stolen mobile device through the “Block your lost/stolen mobile” option provided by the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR). By utilizing the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of the device, users can report, block, and trace their lost or stolen phones.

The key aspect of this service is that once a phone is reported and blocked, it becomes unusable and will not function on any telecom service provider’s network throughout India. This means that even if thieves or unauthorized individuals have possession of the stolen phone, they will not be able to use it with any SIM card.

To avail of this service, users need to access the Sanchar Saathi portal and select the option to report and block their lost or stolen mobile device. They will be required to provide the IMEI number of the phone, which can usually be found on the phone’s packaging, purchase receipt, or by dialing *#06# on the device. Once the IMEI number is entered and submitted, the phone will be officially reported as lost or stolen, and the blocking process will be initiated.

Upon successful blocking, the IMEI number of the device will be added to the CEIR database, effectively rendering the phone unusable. This information is then shared with all telecom service providers in India, ensuring that the blocked phone cannot be connected to any cellular network. Consequently, any attempts to insert a SIM card into the blocked phone will be unsuccessful, as the device will be denied network access.

The purpose of this service is to deter theft and discourage the circulation of stolen mobile devices in the market. By rendering the stolen phones useless, it reduces their value to potential thieves and limits their ability to be resold or used for illegal activities.

It’s important for mobile device owners to be proactive in reporting and blocking their lost or stolen phones through the Sanchar Saathi service. By doing so, they not only protect their personal data and privacy but also contribute to curbing mobile phone theft and creating a safer mobile ecosystem.

In summary, the Department of Telecommunications’ Sanchar Saathi service provides a convenient platform for users to report and block their lost or stolen mobile devices using the IMEI number. Once a phone is reported and blocked, it becomes unusable on any telecom service provider’s network across India, effectively deterring theft and restricting unauthorized usage.
