In their first bilateral meeting since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of India’s unwavering commitment to ending the war through dialogue and diplomacy. Held on the margins of the Hiroshima G7 summit, the meeting showcased India’s determination to alleviate the pain and suffering endured by the Ukrainian people.

Modi emphasized that the situation in Ukraine transcended politics and economics, representing a fundamental issue of humanity and shared values. Recognizing President Zelenskyy’s firsthand understanding of war’s anguish, Modi expressed India’s solidarity and pledged full support in resolving the situation. Additionally, he reassured Zelenskyy of India’s continuous provision of humanitarian aid.

Furthermore, Modi underscored the global implications of the Ukraine war and its impact on the developing world, including food, fuel, and fertilizer shortages. Commending Ukraine’s cooperation in evacuating Indian students, Modi warmly welcomed the decision to hold their examinations in India. The Indian government reiterated its firm support for dialogue and diplomacy as the primary means to achieve a constructive resolution.

President Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for India’s support in upholding Ukraine’s sovereignty on international platforms and providing vital humanitarian aid. He extended an invitation to Modi to visit Ukraine, highlighting India’s crucial role in implementing the Ukraine Peace Formula. However, there was no discussion regarding Zelenskyy’s attendance at India’s upcoming G20 summit.

While the two leaders maintained regular phone conversations over the past 15 months, this in-person meeting further strengthened bilateral ties. Zelenskyy briefed Modi on the situation in Ukraine, and both leaders agreed to maintain close communication.

The Hiroshima G7 summit unveiled fresh sanctions against Russia, underscoring the international community’s resolute stance in addressing the crisis.

The collaboration between India and Ukraine highlights the importance of international cooperation and dialogue in upholding human values. Modi’s support and Zelenskyy’s gratitude affirm the solidarity between the two nations in pursuing a peaceful resolution.
