Assam and Arunachal Pradesh ministers met on Sunday to discuss the longstanding border dispute between the two states. The meeting, which lasted for five hours, was jointly presided over by Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu’s Cabinet colleague Jayanta Malla Baruah and Arunachal Pradesh minister Tumke Bagra, with MLAs and senior officers present.
Assam’s Education Minister tweeted about the meeting, stating that they deliberated on finding a permanent solution to the border dispute. Meanwhile, Baruah expressed optimism that a solution would be reached soon on amicable terms, under the leadership of Home Minister Amit Shah.
Last year, both states signed the Namsai Declaration, pledging to find a solution to the border dispute. As part of the agreement, the number of disputed villages was reduced from 123 to 86. The two states share an 804.1 km-long border.
A tripartite committee was appointed to resolve the issue, which recommended the transfer of certain territories from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh. However, Assam contested this recommendation, and the matter is now in the Supreme Court.
The recent meeting between officials from both states is a positive step towards finding a lasting solution to the border dispute. The commitment of both state governments to resolve the issue amicably is crucial for maintaining peace and harmony in the region.
