The Russo-Ukrainian War has been ongoing between Russia (alongside Russian separatists in Ukraine) and Ukraine since February 2014. Following Ukraine’s Revolution of Dignity, Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine and supported pro-Russian separatists in the war in Donbas against Ukrainian government forces; fighting for the first eight years of the conflict also included naval incidents, cyberwarfare, and heightened political tensions. In February 2022, the conflict saw a major escalation as Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The war between Russia and Ukraine is escalating as tensions between the two countries continue to rise in the region. While the conflict began in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea by Russian forces, the situation has grown more dangerous in recent months. In March 2020, an increase in ceasefire violation reports from both sides indicated an increased level of violence. As a result, the death toll has risen significantly and both governments have taken radical measures to protect the region. In May 2020, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the implementation of martial law in certain areas of Russia near the border with Ukraine. The Ukrainian government responded by increasing its military presence in the region in order to prevent further Russian aggression.
On June 8th, 2020, a record number of violations of the ceasefire were reported by both sides, indicating a growing intensity of the conflict. The fighting has had a serious impact on both sides, with hundreds dead and thousands displaced due to the fighting. Both governments have been accused of carrying out human rights abuses in the conflict. Additionally, there are concerns that the conflict could quickly spread to other parts of Europe and could involve other countries such as Belarus and Moldova. The international community has condemned the continued fighting, calling for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. The European Union, NATO, and the United Nations have all urged both governments to engage in peace negotiations and to refrain from further escalation. Unfortunately, despite these calls, the situation has only continued to deteriorate, with no sign of a political solution in sight. The war between Russia and Ukraine is a devastating conflict that has had tragic consequences for both sides. Both governments must put aside their differences and work towards a peaceful solution to ensure the safety and security of their citizens. It remains to be seen if this will be possible, but without it, the conflict looks to continue and become more violent. Only through direct talks and negotiations can both sides reach a lasting peace.Accusing Putin of a deliberate attack on humanity she said:If we wish to see Ukraine live in freedom it means we think of offensive weapons, but it also means providing the weapons Ukraine needs to free occupied territories.
She said it was important that Vladimir Putin “does not need to be deluded to cherishing the hope that the policy of annexing land is successful”.I have pointed out time and time again we work with our partners to see what kind of military support is required by Ukraine. Her emphasis on working in partnership with allies, the importance of Ukraine’s own assessment of its needs, and the requirement for Putin to be under no illusion that he must give back annexed lands, conveyed an overall impression that she is confident Germany is about to shift its position.Cleverly praised Baerbock saying she had shown huge political courage in standing by Ukraine, adding the west will continue to have conversations with the Ukrainians about the weapons they need.
