Crime Surge and Safety Concerns

The rapper voiced her apprehension that the budget cuts, especially in the police safety budget, could lead to a surge in crime. Mayor Adams has decided to cancel the next five police academy classes, potentially reducing the NYPD’s manpower to its lowest level in three decades. Cardi B argued that such measures could have detrimental effects on the safety and cleanliness of the city.

Sanitation and Other Budget Cuts

In addition to the NYPD, Mayor Adams plans to slash $32 million from the city’s sanitation department, $74 million from the FDNY (Fire Department of New York), and $547 million from the Department of Education. Cardi B expressed concerns about potential rat infestations due to sanitation budget cuts and emphasized the negative impact on essential services.

Cultural Institutions and Philanthropy

Mayor Adams’ budget cuts extend beyond essential services, affecting cultural institutions and philanthropic organizations. Thirty-four popular institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Natural History, will see reduced funding. The mayor called for philanthropic support, acknowledging the need for alignment to address service gaps.

Cardi B’s criticism reflects the concerns of many New Yorkers who fear the potential repercussions of significant budget cuts on their safety, education, and overall quality of life. The rapper’s impassioned plea underscores the broader impact of such decisions on the community at large.
