The first Water Review Meeting of the Tungabhadra Inter-State Irrigation Reservoir was recently conducted online, specifically at the Superintending Engineers’ level. The purpose of this meeting was to prepare the Draft Working Table for the Operation of the Tungabhadra Reservoir for the upcoming water year 2023-24.

The meeting involved the participation of Superintending Engineers from various key locations, including T.B. Dam, Munirabad, T.B. High Level Main Canal, Anantapur, and Low Level Canal Kurnool. By bringing together these representatives, the aim was to assess the current situation and establish a plan for managing the reservoir’s water resources effectively.

One of the primary outcomes of the meeting was the estimation of the total water abstraction expected in the Tungabhadra Reservoir for the water year 2023-24. The participants collectively determined that the projected abstraction of water from the reservoir during this period would amount to approximately 175 thousand million cubic feet (tmcft).

The estimation of 175 tmcft serves as a crucial figure for the planning and management of water resources in the Tungabhadra Reservoir. With this information, stakeholders can now proceed with formulating strategies and guidelines to ensure the optimal utilization and allocation of water during the specified period.

By establishing a Draft Working Table for the Operation of the Tungabhadra Reservoir, the Superintending Engineers aim to create a comprehensive framework that encompasses various aspects of reservoir management. This table will serve as a guiding document, outlining key factors such as water release schedules, irrigation requirements, and overall reservoir operations for the water year 2023-24.

The Superintending Engineers will collaborate closely with relevant authorities and stakeholders to finalize the draft table. This process will involve rigorous analysis of historical data, hydrological forecasts, and water demands from various sectors such as agriculture, domestic use, and industrial activities.

In addition to setting out operational plans, the draft table will also consider measures to address potential challenges and uncertainties, such as variations in rainfall patterns, climate change impacts, and water conservation strategies. By incorporating these factors into the planning process, the Superintending Engineers aim to ensure the resilience and sustainability of the Tungabhadra Reservoir’s water management practices.

The upcoming water year 2023-24 will undoubtedly present its own unique set of circumstances and demands. However, the Water Review Meeting and the subsequent development of the Draft Working Table represent a proactive and collaborative approach to address these challenges head-on. The involvement of key stakeholders and the reliance on data-driven decision-making will play a crucial role in promoting efficient water allocation and maximizing the benefits derived from the Tungabhadra Reservoir.

As the Superintending Engineers continue to refine and finalize the draft table, it is anticipated that the operational guidelines will be shared with relevant departments, water user associations, and local communities. This collaborative approach will ensure that all parties are well-informed and can actively participate in the successful implementation of the reservoir’s operation plans.

The completion of the first Water Review Meeting for the Tungabhadra Reservoir sets a positive precedent for effective inter-state water management. By embracing technology and conducting the meeting online, the stakeholders have demonstrated their commitment to adaptability and resource optimization. It is hoped that the efforts initiated during this meeting will contribute to the sustainable utilization of water resources in the Tungabhadra Reservoir and facilitate prosperous agricultural practices, economic growth, and improved livelihoods in the region for the water year 2023-24 and beyond.
