In a bid to address the escalating issue of drug smuggling through unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) across the Punjab border, Governor Banwarilal Purohit embarked on a two-day visit to Punjab’s border districts. During his inaugural tour to Gurdaspur on June 7, Mr. Purohit expressed grave concern over the use of drones for nefarious activities and emphasized the need for proactive measures to counter this emerging threat.

The proliferation of drones has revolutionized various industries, ranging from logistics to filmmaking. However, the same technological advancements have also been exploited by criminal networks for illicit activities such as drug trafficking. Punjab, situated on the India-Pakistan border, has witnessed a surge in drug smuggling through drones in recent years, posing significant challenges to law enforcement agencies.

Governor Purohit’s visit to the border district of Gurdaspur underscores the state government’s commitment to tackling this menace. During his interaction with local authorities, law enforcement agencies, and community leaders, Mr. Purohit stressed the urgency of implementing proactive measures to curb drug smuggling via drones effectively. He acknowledged the gravity of the situation and highlighted the need for enhanced surveillance, intelligence sharing, and coordination among different stakeholders.

To combat this evolving threat, Governor Purohit advocated for the deployment of advanced technology and expertise. He emphasized the importance of equipping law enforcement agencies with state-of-the-art equipment, including drone detection systems and anti-drone technologies. Such tools would enable authorities to identify and intercept drones used for illegal purposes, thus preventing drug smuggling and safeguarding the state’s security.

Moreover, Mr. Purohit called for strengthening the intelligence network to gather actionable information about drug trafficking networks operating across the border. This would involve close collaboration between intelligence agencies, police departments, and border security forces to gather timely and accurate intelligence, enabling pre-emptive strikes against drug smugglers.

The Governor also highlighted the significance of international cooperation in addressing the issue of cross-border drug smuggling. Recognizing the transnational nature of the problem, he stressed the importance of engaging with neighboring countries, particularly Pakistan, to foster collaboration in curbing drug trafficking and intercepting drones used for illicit activities. By sharing intelligence, coordinating operations, and conducting joint training programs, it becomes possible to disrupt drug networks and dismantle their infrastructure effectively.

Furthermore, Governor Purohit emphasized the need for creating awareness among the general public about the dangers of drug abuse and the role they can play in combating this social evil. Community involvement and support are crucial in identifying and reporting suspicious activities, which can aid law enforcement agencies in intercepting drug smugglers and their drones.

Governor Banwarilal Purohit’s visit to Punjab’s border districts underscores the pressing need for proactive measures to counter the use of drones for drug smuggling. By focusing on enhanced surveillance, intelligence sharing, and coordination among stakeholders, along with the deployment of advanced technology and international cooperation, it is possible to effectively tackle this emerging threat. The collective efforts of law enforcement agencies, community members, and neighboring countries are essential to ensuring a safer and drug-free Punjab.
