In our lives, it is often said that good and pious individuals serve as role models worthy of emulation. Their exemplary behavior and conduct can guide us towards leading better lives. It is important to listen carefully to what they say, as the information they impart may contain valuable guidance and suggestions. Even when individuals whom we may not particularly like or agree with offer their thoughts, it is crucial not to turn a deaf ear but rather receive, analyze, and potentially absorb any useful suggestions or advice they may have.

A fascinating example of the significance of heeding advice can be found in the story of Ravana, the mythical king of Lanka. Ravana’s mother wisely cautioned him to pay heed to the words of Vibhishana, his younger brother. As long as Ravana listened to Vibhishana’s advice, he ruled his kingdom peacefully and prosperously.

However, the turning point came when Hanuman, the mighty monkey warrior, arrived in Lanka as a messenger. Fueled by his ego and anger, Ravana initially decided to kill Hanuman. It was at this critical juncture that Vibhishana reminded Ravana of the principles of Rajaneethi, the ethics of governance. He enlightened Ravana that according to Rajaneethi, a person on a mission as an envoy should never be slain. If punishment is necessary, the envoy may be chastised, but killing them would violate the principles of righteousness.

Intrigued by Vibhishana’s advice, Ravana reconsidered his decision and opted for an alternative course of action. Instead of killing Hanuman, he instructed his soldiers to set fire to the monkey’s tail. Although this act caused great distress to Hanuman, it marked a crucial turning point in Ravana’s fate. Until that point, Ravana had not encountered any significant problems or obstacles in his life.

The story of Ravana teaches us several important lessons about the value of listening to advice, even from those we may not necessarily like or agree with. It highlights the importance of humility, open-mindedness, and the willingness to consider alternate viewpoints. Ravana’s downfall could have been averted had he chosen to disregard Vibhishana’s counsel, but his decision to listen and act accordingly led to a temporary shift in his fate.

In our own lives, we encounter numerous situations where listening to advice can prove beneficial. It allows us to broaden our perspectives, gain new insights, and make informed decisions. Regardless of personal biases or preconceived notions, being receptive to the words of others can lead to personal growth and development.

However, it is essential to exercise discernment when absorbing advice. Not all suggestions may be applicable or beneficial to our specific circumstances. It is our responsibility to analyze the information we receive and apply only what resonates with our values and goals.

The story of Ravana and Vibhishana serves as a powerful reminder of the value of heeding advice, regardless of the source. Good and pious individuals can indeed be role models worth emulating, as their behavioral conduct can guide us towards leading better lives. By actively listening and considering the advice of others, even those we may not initially favor, we open ourselves up to new perspectives and opportunities for personal growth.
