World Bicycle Day is celebrated annually on June 3rd. The United Nations General Assembly established it in 2018 to recognize the bicycle as an affordable, reliable, clean, and environmentally friendly means of transportation. This day holds significance as it marks the anniversary of Karl von Drais’ invention of the bicycle in 1817. The United Nations designated June 3rd to honor the bicycle’s exceptional qualities and its role in practical transport for over two centuries.
This year’s World Bicycle Day theme is “Riding Together for a Sustainable Future.” It emphasizes the collective effort required to promote cycling as a sustainable form of transportation.

World Bicycle Day has several important objectives. Firstly, it aims to raise awareness about the numerous benefits of cycling, such as promoting physical fitness, reducing air pollution and traffic congestion, and fostering social inclusion. Secondly, it advocates for improved infrastructure for cyclists, calling for better bike lanes, paths, and other facilities to ensure safer and more convenient cycling. Lastly, it highlights cycling as a means to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including poverty reduction, improved health, and sustainable development.
World Bicycle Day was first observed on June 3, 2018, following the adoption of a resolution during the 72nd Regular Session of the United Nations General Assembly. More than 193 member states endorsed this declaration, encouraging the inclusion of bicycles in regional, international, and subnational development programs and policies. The General Assembly recognized the bicycle’s uniqueness, longevity, and versatility, along with its contribution to environmental stewardship and health, leading to the declaration of June 3 as World Bicycle Day.
