India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, addressed the “very complicated challenge” posed by China and affirmed the government’s actions to preserve the border status quo. In his speech at Anant National University, Jaishankar acknowledged the visible tensions in the border areas, likely referring to China’s incursions in eastern Ladakh. He stressed the need for both nations to establish a mutual equilibrium based on respect, sensitivity, and recognition of each other’s interests.

India will firmly assert its opposition and defend its rights if China fails to demonstrate respect, sensitivity, and recognition. Jaishankar highlighted India’s efforts to strengthen ties with neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan, emphasizing improved connectivity and perception in the region. He also mentioned India’s engagement in the Indo-Pacific, including collaborations on maritime issues, infrastructure connectivity, and partnerships with countries such as Israel, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India is laying the foundation for its long-term global footprint, going beyond immediate concerns. Jaishankar highlighted the significance of India’s rise, noting that it is comparable only to China’s recent ascent.
