Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is set to visit Nigeria for three days, becoming the first Indian defence minister to do so. The visit aims to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Nigeria’s newly elected President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and bolster military relations as China expands its influence in Africa.

During the visit, Singh will meet outgoing Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari at a reception. The trip signifies a significant milestone in strengthening the bond between the two countries. Senior officials from the Indian Defence Ministry and key defence public sector undertakings will accompany the minister, engaging with Nigerian industry representatives and armed forces officials to explore collaboration opportunities.

In addition to the military agenda, Singh will address a diaspora event to connect with the sizable Indian community in Nigeria, estimated at around 50,000 individuals.

This visit follows Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pande’s recent trip to Egypt, demonstrating India’s growing military outreach in Africa. In January, the Special Forces of India and Egypt conducted a joint army exercise called ‘Cyclone-1’ in Rajasthan. Additionally, Egypt’s President, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, served as the chief guest at India’s Republic Day parade. India also conducted a field training exercise for multiple African countries in March, underscoring its commitment to strengthening ties with the continent.
